I was married at the time, when I wrote this song, to a wonderful woman who I'm still very close with. I live my life like that, not by choice, but it just seems to be where I am. '7/4 Shoreline' (Broken Social Scene, 2005)ĭrew: So much of what I write about is always leaving, always being halfway in or out the door. I kind of wrote them from the perspective of the people who were screaming at me.ģ. I turned around, went right back into the studio and I wrote the lyrics. They had condoms with stickers on them that said "Papa don't preach."ĭrew: It was unreal, something I had never experienced, so stupidly just walking into basically what was a battle. Spearin: I remember getting swallowed up by that whole thing and then going to a Hidden Cameras show in the middle of it all, which was incredible. And I turned around and someone screamed in my face, and all of a sudden we were surrounded by other protesters who were waiting for us to be there. I remember taking a bite of my pizza, holding the sign, and I look down and there was a man praying for me. Jason Collett called and said, "Oh cool, I'm going to grab a slice of pizza, want me to grab one for you?" So, I go there, in this huge crowd, and he hands me my slice of pizza and a picket sign. I went to the staging of the cross because the Pope was in town for the youth mission. 'It's All Gonna Break' (Broken Social Scene, 2005)ĭrew: We had that song up and going and I didn't totally have the lyrics for it yet.

In 2010, Bruce McDonald made This Movie Is Broken, a movie about the band's Harbourfront show during the 2009 Toronto strike. Stuart Berman's This Book Is Broken (2009) covers the band from its inception to its critical acclaim. It includes grand orchestrations featuring guitars, horns, woodwinds, and violins, unusual song structures, and an experimental, and sometimes chaotic production style from David Newfeld, who produced the second and third albums. The group's sound combines elements of all of its members' respective musical projects, and is occasionally considered baroque pop. These associated acts include Metric, Feist, Stars, Apostle of Hustle, Do Make Say Think, KC Accidental, Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton, Amy Millan, and Jason Collett. Most of its members play in various other groups and solo projects, mainly in the city of Toronto. Alongside Drew and Canning, the other core members of the band are Justin Peroff (drums), Andrew Whiteman (guitar) and Charles Spearin (guitar). Broken Social Scene is a Canadian indie rock band, a musical collective including as few as six and as many as nineteen members, formed by Kevin Drew (vocals, guitar) and Brendan Canning (vocals, bass) in 1999.
